Frequently Asked Questions
Waldheim Farm answers some common questions about the Wiltshire breed.
Does the shedded wool cause messy paddocks and yards?
Wool in paddocks and yards is generally only visible during the main shedding season in spring. Since Wiltshire sheep have relatively short fleeces, there isn’t a significant amount to shed, and what is shed breaks down over time.
What is the temperament of the Wiltshire Sheep?
Wiltshire sheep are hardy, lively, free moving sheep. While they may sometimes be perceived as a bit wild, this stems from their low handling requirements and little need for yarding. Ultimately, like all livestock, their behaviour is influenced by how they are managed.
Does the short fleece protect them during the cold season?
While Wiltshire sheep don’t have as long a fleece as traditional breeds, they are covered with a dense coat of wool during autumn and winter that protects them from cold and wet conditions. We have no worries about lambs being inadequately protected at lambing during the wet and windy weber winter weather.
Do Wiltshire sheep need drenching?
The breeds inherent parasite tolerance means they have little requirement for drenching. The 2th rams have been drenched twice.
